Key Programming Car Keys

Most dealerships and brick and mortar locksmiths have tools to assist you in programming replacement keys or restore information from the immobilizer. These tools are usually bidirectional OBD-II units.

Insert a new key and turn it to the off position without triggering the engine. Repeat this procedure several times over a predetermined period of time typically indicated by the door lock turning or chiming.

Self-programming

In most modern vehicles the key fob has a microcomputer chip that communicates with the car. Both devices must be programmed in order that they can recognize one other. It is not an easy process and specialized tools are required, which are usually only available through locksmiths or dealerships. If you follow the correct instructions, it's possible to program your own key fob at home.

Check to see if you have the right VIN for your vehicle. It is found on a variety of official documents, including the title, insurance card and registration. The VIN number is also visible on the windshield of many vehicles. By using this information, you will be able to find the programming code for your particular car.

The next step is to remove the ignition key. Then, you'll insert the new key into the ignition and switch it to the "On" position. You'll hear an erupting sound as you enter the programming mode. This will allow you to test the key and determine whether it's working.

If the key does not work, it may require resetting. Slide the purple locking clip aside and take it off. Then using a small tool to lift the pin tab to lock it and pull the wire from pin 3 to pin 15. Then, you can change the key and use it for your vehicle.
